Oedipus The King

This past school week was short, because we had a field trip on Tuesday and on Friday we had college day. We got to finish the exciting story of Oedipus and watched the tragic ending in class. Oedipus is a man who escapes from his prophecies but by doing that he fulfills them. In our english class this week we were assigned to summarize the While play into two sentences I personally wasn't able to because i explain everything in detail. I believe the ending was very disturbing and scary to see the video. I do not see the point of why Oedipus would take his eyes out, why didn't he just kill himself like his mother/wife?. Overall I enjoyed reading the story it really captured my attention while reading it.
I am going to buy my next book read this weekend I am excited and want to start reading it.
I am also looking forward to the next project that Stephanie told us about yesterday and I believe I am going to make a piece of music or take a picture. I am a little confused about the project but will ask questions on Monday. I am looking forward to the following weeks.

  1. Oedipus didn't kill himself because the Greeks believed in the afterlife. If he had killed himself, he would have had to face his father and mother in Hades. By blinding himself, he would at least not have to look them in the eye when he does die.

  2. I never realized that the reason why Oedipus blinded himself was because of the afterlife (as Stefan said). But after reading/watching that part I do agree with you when I thought, why doesn't he just kill himself? Being blinded and still having to live with his faults is like being tortured everyday.

  3. Well I like where everybody is going with this. It is good to question the motives of someone to do something so crazy. I think that the truth is Oedipus wasn't ready to go to Hades (the underworld/afterlife)so instead of killing himself, he continued to live in the real world but took his sight so he didn't have to face other people which would hurt him more than he hurt himself. So I agree with Stefan.
